The University of Denver (DU) is a top-ranked university in a thriving city at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) at DU was created in 1976 to house one of the first Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) programs in the country, under the Vail training model (practitioner-scholar). The PsyD program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1979. In addition to its broad and general education in Clinical Psychology, PsyD program also provides specialty training in a variety of socially responsive service areas, including in Latinx Psychology, Military Psychology, Health/Oncology Psychology, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health, and Substance Use Disorders. Furthermore, GSPP provides four specialized master’s programs: Sport Coaching, Sport and Performance Psychology, Forensic Psychology, and International Disaster Psychology, as well as online certificates and continuing education. The School also has a partially affiliated, APA-accredited internship consortium and several in-house and satellite psychology training clinics that serve Denver and the surrounding communities. As a professional school, GSPP promotes and utilizes high-level pedagogy that integrates applied practice, theory, research, and scholarship. As part of our training model, GSPP offers a broad range of confidential and evidence-based mental health care to the Denver community through multiple specialized clinics. Our Professional Psychology Clinic (PPC) has provided low-cost, high-quality psychological services to the Denver community for over 30 years and houses a number of specialty clinics to work with specific populations. The PPC is one of the largest psychology training clinics in the United States, with more than 200 students providing more than 11,000 hours of therapy and assessment services each year.

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) at the University of Denver (DU) seeks a faculty member for a 10-month, research-track position with a specialty in fatherhood. By "fatherhood," we are intentionally inclusive of research and clinical work with anyone who identifies themselves in the role of fathers, trans masculine parents, father-figures, grandfathers, and other related role models. The rationale is to focus on this gendered role in children's development, not to preclude the acknowledgement of the importance of other caregivers regardless of gender and sexual identities and expanded relationships. The position is likely to be filled at the Assistant Professor rank, but an appointment at a higher rank may be considered for a candidate with exceptional experience. The position is funded for three years, with the expectation that continuing the position will depend on the faculty member securing additional funding. The position will report to Dr. Tracy Vozar, Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialty. The expected but flexible start date for this position is September 1, 2020. This position has research, teaching, advising, supervising, and service components.
Applied Clinical Research: A major focus of this position will be to secure external funding by developing and running applied clinical research projects, particularly to continue funding for the position after the initial three years. Research projects are expected to have direct relevance for enhancing both clinical services and student training. Therefore, applied clinical research involves extensive collaboration with multiple stakeholders and engagement opportunities beyond traditional research models, such as creating field placement opportunities for students, providing clinical supervision and student mentorship, directly engaging with community members, or working to improve data collection in GSPP’s clinics. Developing and managing these projects may require significant administrative work, as staff support is limited. Published scholarship generated from this applied clinical research may be in the form of community or professional outreach as well as traditional academic outlets.
Teaching and Service: Duties of core PsyD faculty include teaching, advising, and supervising students as well as serving GSPP and the University (e.g., participating in student competency exams, faculty meetings, and the admissions process, and serving as chair or committee member on PsyD doctoral papers). The position will teach courses in the Clinical Psychology PsyD program and/or possibly the MA programs. In addition, GSPP requires all faculty and staff to exhibit excellent citizenship and pursue professional development to foster a model workplace.
Appointment, tenure, and promotion for this role will be governed by the University of Denver’s Policies and Procedures Relating to Faculty Appointment, Promotion, & Tenure. The position is likely to be filled at the Assistant Professor rank, but appointment at a higher rank will be considered for a candidate with exceptional experience:
- Assistant Professors will be candidates in the first two to seven years of experience post-doctorate with strong, documented potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship.
- Associate Professors will be candidates who are mid-career teacher/scholars with a strong, documented record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Professors will be candidates at the top of the profession as teacher/scholars with an extensive, strong, documented excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Often candidates will have received awards for their scholarship and teaching and have evidence of functioning as a mentor to other faculty.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- A doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology or a closely related field.
- Licensed or licensed-eligible in Colorado.
- Specialized expertise and experience around fatherhood.
- At least two years of teaching, training, supervision, and/or applied research experience at the doctoral level.
- Knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to effectively engage with diverse individuals and communities.
- Demonstrated experience securing external funding for projects.
