The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has nine full-time faculty and is located in a newly built section of the Science Center on the main Duluth campus. The department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosts four programs: Chemistry BA, Chemistry BS, Biochemistry BS, and Chemistry MS. Both Bachelor of Science degrees are accredited by their respective academic bodies, the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. We have access to a wide variety of instrumentation for atomic, molecular, and biochemical analysis, and have strong institutional support for seeking grant funding. In 2019, the department successfully launched a completely online Masters program in chemistry that provides a unique opportunity for advanced curriculum development.
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department teaches approximately 300 undergraduate students each year. Our students go on to both graduate and professional programs, particularly in the healthcare fields. Our majors also find success in graduate programs at leading research institutions like the Broad Institute, CERN, the Mayo Clinic, and Stanford University. Department faculty are highly engaged in institutional efforts relating to equity, diversity and inclusion, including the TRIO McNair program, a history of successful federal S-STEM funding (including our most recent award), and the JED Campus initiative. Department faculty are interested in working together towards innovative pedagogical approaches and are active in exploring new avenues to address mental wellness, academic advising, and curriculum delivery.
