Title: Research Scientist
Department: Pulmonary & Critical Care
School: Medicine
Location: BRB Building, 3rd Floor
Supervisor Name and Title: Kenneth E. Remy, MD,MHSc, MSCi, FCCM; Associate Professor
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Remy Host Immune Response Laboratory elucidates and identifies mechanistic and causal pathways in diseases that cause host immune dysregulation including SARS-CoV-2 infection and sepsis (adult and pediatric. Understanding these mechanisms will enhance current understanding of host innate and adaptive immune responses in COVID disease and sepsis, and enable the application and identification of potential targets for disease intervention including the use of immunoadjuvants. My current work explores two areas: heme/iron-based trafficking the focus of my NIH funded NIGMS K08 and signaling in immune dysregulation in context of diseases of intravascular hemolysis (COVID, sepsis, malaria, sickle cell disease, thalassemia) and after red blood cell transfusion; and real time immunophenotyping of pro and hypoinflammatory states to identify timing for immunoadjuvant therapies. Additionally, the laboratory investigates novel immunoadjuvant therapies for sepsis in adults and children including the use of IL-7 and PD-L1. The use of real-time immunophenotyping assay platforms such as our use of whole blood ELISpot assay are currently in development to evaluate response of therapeutics from an in vitro translational model from a patient and back to the patient.
The Research Scientist will oversee research projects within the lab, providing scientific oversight, guidance to lab members, and lab management in the absence of the principal investigator. The Research Scientist will design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, oversee/supervise staff and students, manage animal models, and fully execute research projects in the field of hemolysis, immune endotyping, deep immune profiling in both human and animal models. The Research Scientist will utilize PCR, Flow Cytometry, ELISA, ssRNASeq and Bulk RNA sequencing and additional biochemical medthods. The Research Scientist will keep the PI informed of progress of research projects and provide recommendations on experimental design and project plans. The Research Scientist will independently prepare manuscripts. It is expected that the Research Scientist will apply for grant funding as a Principal Investigator in this area of interest and maintain independent research though submission of subsequent grant applications an needed. The Research Scientist will also participate collaboratively with other Principal Investigators within and external to CWRU.
